Birthday Reflections
This week, we celebrated two important birthdays in our family. These significant milestones invite reflection on this incredible journey.
My remarkable daughter celebrated her 19th birthday. She has grown into a deeply resilient and empathetic young woman, shaped by the challenges our family has faced with addiction. Even while away at school, her adventurous spirit and witty sense of humor shine brightly. I admire how she nurtures new interests and builds meaningful relationships, making me proud every day. She has a unique ability to understand and connect with people, often going out of her way to help friends and lend a listening ear. Her skills and knowledge are preparing her for an impactful future that will incorporate her excellent communication skills, artistic talents, and persuasive nature. When she was little, dress-up was her favorite—makeup, heels, fancy dresses, and jewelry. Now, she carries that elegance into her young adulthood, highlighting her strong fashion sense.
My other loved one also celebrated his birthday and is looking toward his future helping others who struggle with substance use disorder. He is a college sophomore pursuing a degree in social work and is an active member of his recovery community, both as a sponsor and a sponsee, giving and receiving support in ways that continue to inspire me. He is also enrolled in a Certified Recovery Specialist program and has 31 months of continuous sobriety. Recovery is the foundation that has allowed him to rebuild his life and become the person he is today. Sobriety gave him a second chance—an opportunity not only to live but to thrive. As we celebrated his birthday, I couldn’t help but marvel at how far he’s come, and I’m overwhelmed with pride for all that he has achieved.
Reflecting on their childhood birthdays brings back such joy. We always made those celebrations big, filled with fun in our backyard. There was always a bouncy castle, and each year brought something special—one year we had pony rides, another brought a magician and a clown. We always made sure to incorporate their unique interests, like sand art and bracelet making for her and a Minecraft scavenger hunt for him. We also celebrated half-birthdays in special ways, often with breakfast donuts and, of course, cakes.
I love birthdays because they offer a time for reflection, a moment to look forward, and a reason for celebration. Though I feel a pang of sadness not being able to celebrate with them in person, every call or text from them, even without a particular reason, fills my heart with happiness. The bond we share is a reminder of the love that connects us, no matter the distance.
So, happy birthday to these incredible young people. Your futures are bright, and I am inspired by you both every single day. Your intelligence, your humor, your passions, and your kind hearts make you uniquely you. Here’s to a year filled with growth, success, and continued strength. I couldn’t be prouder of you both.
